On this historical tour weekend we will use iron steeds to explore the old west around the turn of the century and
enjoy a Dutch oven meal just like the pioneers. Mid January is a great time to get away to the desert with beautiful
days, clear blue skies and the smell of the creosote bushes.

This adventure is a day and 1/2 of scenic, historical, light wheeling in the famous Johnson Valley and a night of primitive camping under
the stars. We will introduce you to the art of Dutch Oven cooking and provide a few samples. Bring your own Dutch Oven if you have one and
wish to try your hand at a dish. We will also have a large grill on the fire so you can barbeque your favorite meal instead.

Expect the terrain to range from small sand dunes to mild rocks, flat dry lakes, to hills.
If you have never been to Johnson Valley, this trip will give you a good introduction to the features and geography
of the area. Johnson Valley is the home of the famous "Hammers" trails - the Sludge Hammer and the Jack Hammer.
These are extreme trails beyond the level of difficulty of the Rubicon Trails. We will not be doing them or any
difficult trails. We can watch if someone else has decided to risk their vehicle.

On this trip you can camp in a tent or bring your camper or trailer. We will set up a base camp on the dry lake.
Of course you need to be able to negotiate the dirt road out to the camp site.
This is the desert in the winter. It can get cold and night and we have no control over the wind.
A high wind can hamper our cookout.
If you have a Dutch oven (or want to purchase one in advance) our Expert Dutch Oven Chef, Baja Annie, will be on hand to
give you lessons and pointers.
The trip plan will tell you what you need in order to purchase one, properly season it, and give advice on ingredients
to bring. Of course bring lots of fire wood!
