Dutch OvenThis 5 hour clinic will provide you with the knowledge and skills to launch you on the path to Dutch Oven cooking

Make a resolution to cook with a Dutch Oven. We will get you started. Unlike those involving diet and exercise, this resolution is sure to stick. If you’re not already using a Dutch oven, I encourage you to start. They aren’t expensive or difficult to work with. You’ll enjoy learning a new skill and savoring your dishes at the camp site.

You might just get invited on more camping and 4-wheeling trips.

Dutch ovens are a great way to bring the taste of home cooking to the outdoors.

A Dutch oven is a cooking pot that’s designed to be heated by charcoal or a campfire. They are quite often made of cast iron because iron offers a uniform distribution of heat. Dutch ovens are used for baking goods, but are also to cook with. People make soups, casseroles, and other dishes with a Dutch oven. Dutch ovens can be purchased at most outdoor stores such as Cabela’s, Amazon and Bass Pro. Wall Mart has a limited selection. Stick with high quality Lodge or Camp Chef brands.

The ovens come in a variety of sizes, with the most common being 10″ and 12″ in diameter. A 12″ pot holds six quarts of food and will serve four to six people. For two to four people, a 10″ pot should be sufficient. Be sure you purchase a “camp” oven with 3 little legs and a lip on the lid to hold hot coals.

Dutch Oven

To identify pieces of gear and cooking items like a Dutch oven. Inscribe your initials in a piece of metal (brass or aluminum are fine), then attach that to the item with a key ring.

For this class you do not need to bring your own oven. We will have ones you can use. But by all means bring one if you have a clean, seasoned Dutch Oven along with any accessories you have.

We will cover:

  • Choosing the right size and type of Dutch Oven
  • Seasoning a Dutch Oven
  • Useful Tools and accessories
  • How to control the heat
  • Cooking with Charcoal
  • Cooking Techniques
  • Hands on Cooking Session
  • Cleaning and Storage

Once you register we will send you a list of ingredients to bring for the hands on session. You will be able to take your cooked food home. So bring a large platter.

The class is limited to 10 students.
