How to Be a Great Camp Cook

By Tom Severin February 13, 2021 February 13, 2021 2021 Articles, Camping, Events, Food, Trail Leader

Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. I really wanted to give this guy a chance. He said he could cook, and he expressed a strong desire to cook during one of my four-wheeling expeditions. Though he tried hard, he simply couldn’t handle the duties. From buying food to preparing the meals,… Continue reading

Solar Power System for Off-Road Use

By Tom Severin May 17, 2020 May 19, 2020 2020 Articles, Camping, Equipment, How Does It Work

For most of us, off-road travel requires electrical power for an ever-increasing number of electrical devices. There’s the fridge-freezer, of course. But also, a laptop (or two), GPS receiver, two-way radios, air compressors, air pump (for mattresses), power tools, and such. Power consumption isn’t an issue while the engine is… Continue reading

Safeguard Gear, Food from Varmints, Vagrants and Weather

By Tom Severin March 21, 2019 June 11, 2019 2019 Articles, Camping, Food, Things To Know

We had just returned from a day of 4-wheeling. Our base campsite in the Mojave Desert was a beautiful patch of lush desert with cholla, creosote bushes, Joshua trees, and Mojave yucca. Each of us headed for our tents. At one point I heard one camper yell out, “What the …?!”. He… Continue reading

The Forgotten Items!

By Tom Severin October 28, 2018 June 11, 2019 2018 Articles, Camping, Communications, Equipment, Things To Know

One constant in four-wheeling is the need to pack properly. Because we’re off on our own – away from the conveniences of city life – we have to be self-sufficient. Not only do we prepare for the expected (camping, cookouts, and such), we must try to prepare for the unexpected.… Continue reading

Fire Restrictions Shouldn’t Extinguish Camping Trip

By Tom Severin June 13, 2018 June 11, 2019 2018 Articles, Camping, Environmental Impact, Equipment

Summer is almost here. In southern California, that means fire restrictions take effect soon. While these restrictions seem to put a crimp on your camping, it’s really just a minor inconvenience. You still get to enjoy the outdoors. It’s just a different style of camping. During these periods, campfires and… Continue reading

Put a Spark in Your Camping With Kid-Friendly Jokes

By Tom Severin May 11, 2018 May 11, 2018 2018 Articles, Camping, Uncategorized

Hey, buddy. Did you hear the one about the ‘gator that strolled into a leather store? He was looking for a long-lost cousin. Oh, come on. It wasn’t that bad. (Was it?) Chances are you’ve heard tons of jokes like this one. (And others I couldn’t print here). While most… Continue reading

Pony Express Trail a Fun, Interesting 4WD Trip

By Tom Severin March 14, 2018 March 14, 2018 2018 Articles, Camping, Events

Even after decades and thousands of miles of four wheeling in the western US, I’m still amazed to find neat stretches of trail scattered about. That was the case last year when I stumbled upon a portion of the Pony Express trail. One late winter day, I was traveling on… Continue reading

How to Beat the Cold While Camping

  By Tom Severin January 18, 2018 January 18, 2018 2018 Articles, Camping

It was late January or early February. I was leading a small group on a three-day expedition on the Mojave Trail. We planned to explore parts of the trail and nearby sites. Late the first night we turned off and drove about seven miles into Carruthers Canyon, located in the… Continue reading

The Perfect Cup of “Camp” Coffee

  By Tom Severin November 17, 2017 November 22, 2017 2017 Articles, Camping

It was a frosty Sunday morning. I was camping in the North Dakota  Badlands, Slope County. Though early, a clear blue sky surrounded us. Save for the light chatter around the campfire, there wasn’t a sound. With no plans for the morning, I stayed put for a while and enjoyed… Continue reading

San Rafael a Swell of a Drive

By Tom Severin June 15, 2017 June 28, 2017 2017 Articles, Camping, Events

Sometimes the best 4WD trips are those taken mostly on a whim. Such was the case with my recent visit to the San Rafael Swell of Utah. It is a fascinating area, and one that offers a tremendous amount of four wheeling opportunities. Running right up the interior of Emery… Continue reading

Perfect 4-Wheel Drive Weekend

  By Tom Severin December 7, 2016 May 31, 2017 2016 Articles, Camping

What makes the perfect 4WD trip? Close your eyes and think about that for a moment. Picture the ideal off-road adventure. What does it look like? I got to thinking about this the other day. I had just returned from a couple days off road. I was sitting in my… Continue reading

Impressive Base Camp Selection

  By Tom Severin November 25, 2016 May 17, 2017 2016 Articles, Camping

Because many 4WD excursions last two days or more, there’s usually the need to select a campsite arrangement. You can elect to go with a base camp, or set up camp at a different location each night (what I call a cruise or a moving camp). Another option is a… Continue reading

  • FAQs

    When are classes?
We publish a schedule of classes for the current year.   You can view all the dates by selecting the Recreational Training Schedule menu and then click on the class you are interested in.
    How much are classes?
Many of our clinics are $275 per person per day.  You can see the price just below the class date by selecting tab Recreational Training Schedule menu and then click on the class you are interested in.
Does it cost extra to bring another person if they are not going to drive?
Yes – We charge per person including passengers since we feel everyone attending, riding, watching, etc. learns a great deal.
    Can I bring a Minor/Child with me?
Yes – However with the Pandemic we are limiting classes to 10 and this might not be the best time to bring a child. Badlands Off-Road Adventures does not charge for children who are not licensed drivers. Children are welcome to attend and ride along. Older children (6 years and older) will have a blast. You are responsible to ensure they stay out of the path of other vehicles. The classroom portion may be too longs for smaller children.
Can I bring a dog with me?
Yes – Dogs are welcome. It is your responsibility that they do not disturb other students, are put in danger of being run over, or create a situation with other dogs.
Does Day 1 and Day 2 need to be done on the same weekend?
No, we treat each day as a separate class, so you control, as much as possible, the combination of clinics and attendees within the constraints of group clinic pricing. For this reason, we provide several one-day sessions that you can select, combine into a multi-day clinic or take individually at a later time.
    Cancellation Policy
A full refund will be issued if you cancel more than 14 days before the start of an event. If you cancel within 2 days of the event: – the balance is transferable to another event within 12 months of the cancellation date. If you do not show up and did not cancel, you better have a darn good reason to convince us to transfer the balance to another event. If we must cancel an event, a full refund will be issued.
    Alcohol Policy
Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs can seriously impair an individual’s judgement and reactions leading to an increased risk of accidents and injury. We require that all drivers are sober when driving. Drinking alcoholic beverages or using drugs before or during the driving clinics or during the driving portion of an off-road event is not allowed by the driver and any of the passengers. Since, we will be driving after lunch, alcoholic beverages are not allowed at lunch.
On our adventure trips, we have no objections, to drinking alcoholic beverages in moderation in camp after all driving is completed for the day. If a night run is planned, then there is no drinking of alcohol until after the vehicles return to camp and are parked for the rest of the evening.
We have a zero-tolerance policy regarding these substances and their use until we reach camp each day.
We require that all beverages (whether alcoholic or not) be in metal or plastic containers. Glass containers are not allowed in much of our travel area.
